I like to make hand carved bowls out of chunks like this, although I haven't done one out of oak yet. I have a pic of two black walnut bowls I hand carved on the gallery but I can't seem to get them to post here, I'll keep trying. You could also get two or more nice turned bowls/platters out of this piece depending on how you cut it, size of your lathe, etc.

Funny how we see each what we like to do in wood.:wwink:

I see carvings. :gar-Bi I would slice it into 3 or 4 vertical columns and leave the bark intact. Then I would leave several inches as is on the bottom as a natural edge stand and carve above it on each one. A standing bear would look great.

Cut it in half and use it for book ends. Or cut it in small pieces and give everyone a piece that has asked for one.:widea:

After you give it to me I will have Dick resaw it thin enough to do fret work out it, keeping the rough bark intact.

If sliced thin I think that it would be nice scrolling material, but I personally think that it would make beautiful bowls.

Please DO NOT send it to me - I got way to many of those chucks laying around here. They make good door stops BTW :)

Nice piece of wood brother, drink a good cup of coffee tonight just prior to going to bed. Then when you hit the sack and it is all quiet in the house, I am sure some good ideas will come to you. This is sometimes how I get the best inspirations to new projects. Have thought of a lot of inventions and such lying supine on my back in the bed. Just remember, try not to make it too much of a habit of going into your shop at 3:00 am such as I have done itn the past. It makes for a long day the next day at work and such.

Take care, Chris.
