A little history,These peices where slates from an old roll top desk that I know was old back in 1950. I dressed them up and have build a new roll top computer desk with them.

Can you post bigger pics?

Can you tells us about the grain structure (open or closed)

It could be a few woods from the pics you are showing. Chestnut, alder, perhaps even Elm.

It is a very tight grain not real hard.

Poplar heartwood? The colors of the heartwood can vary from browns to reddish, especially old growth cut from large trees.

That appears that it could be red gum. I have a few pieces that came out of some old cabinets from a drug store. I also had some experience with red gum when I worked with a millwork co. The color and workability you described leads me to think it could be the same.:)

Have had a lot of replys, including someone from the marina said it could be teak, but I still have no idia. If I can go to Hickery on the 27-28, I will bring the pieces with me.

hard to tell from the photos. I would guess a low to medium density hardwood.

I would believe stained poplar at this point
