(1) I downed a dying red oak and didn't hit the house :mrgreen:

(2) And I didn't hit any other trees :icon_thum

Red_Oak_down_1.jpg

(3) And it didn't fall on me (to chagrin of loml :rolf:)

Red_oak_down_2.jpg

(4) And I didn't have to pay someone $200-300 :nah:

Also managed to acquire some direly needed firewood . . . it's been a cold winter and the tree is only 20ft from my firewood stack :eusa_danc

Nah, I'm no Scott Smith nor Jeff . . . but reading some of their prior posts was very helpful in this endeavor.

Thanks NCWWer :icon_thum

Mike brings up a question I've had rolling around in my head for a while. How do you tell the difference between lumber and firewood? The same trees are good for each purpose. I know you won't mill 6" diameter oak for lumber, but where is the line drawn?:dontknow:

Wow, "landscaping" seemed to be a popular choice this past weekend. I didn't move two "Burning Bushes" from a friend's house to my front yard on Sunday. I did it on Saturday while listening to a most excellent Noon Football [STRIKE]Whuppin'[/STRIKE], er "game".

On Sunday, I laid on the couch and begged the muscle gods for mercy on my poor hurtin' body.

The line is drawn at "what do I need this wood for?" (if the wood is good for both WW'ing and burning).

Great job, timberjack!!

Hey, Could you cut some rounds off the butt end for Yoricks's cheese boards? My neighbor is procrastinating on cutting down the trees he promised me! (actually, he cut down one but the whole center was rotted out)

How thick? And I can't promise they will be parallel :mrgreen:
Chainsaw is only 16" and the butt is a bit bigger.

Most of the wood in this one is only "firewood" quality.

Don't know about timberjack, but afterward I was as hungry as a lumberjack :rolf:

Great job Roger:icon_thum LOML gets a little scared when I start my saw up - some of the trees are pretty close to the house - She is from Montana where there is WIDE open country and she would love for me to take all of our trees down :eusa_naug not going to happen

Hopefully he'll chime in here if he is still interested. He wanted 1 1/2" IIRC, so I told him I would cut them 3" and then he could do the rest to make them even!! He said he wanted it bark on and with "character", so to me that means firewood grade.:rolf:

Great work Roger! I'm surprised nobody else reported on what they didn't do. Here's what I did not do on Sunday:
- Do anything useful (does napping count?)
- Surpass DaveO's post count (but I did make some useless posts)
- Set the house on fire (although I did have a cookout)
- Save the world (but I did pet my dogs)

Since we're breaking records today, this could be the longest thread ever :) Only to be surpassed by tomorrow's post, "What I did not do on Monday" :gar-Bi

Jerrye - about 12" (DIB) Diameter Inside the Bark on the little end is the "line" - typically you'll loose 2" a side boxing out the heart. That leaves you with approx a 8x8 or a 9x8 and depending how straight the little sapling grew and it may have as much as a 4x4 of pith waste. There are times that the pith is good and straight you can edge it out and maybe get a few more boards but it's fairly rare. So all in all your looking at a couple of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9" wide boards, somewhere around (30 ~ 40 BF) more around 30 BF on a 8' long log. There are also times you can scalp a few wider boards off the outside but with something like oak there is not much interest in mostly sap wood boards...

Personally, I try and not cut any log that's under 14" diameter on the small end, unless someone is paying me :gar-La;

Roger - I'm sorry that poor little oak gave up the ghost so young... Looks like you had a good time swinging the saw around :)

:tinysmile_cry_t: Yeah, me too!
Untimely demise for a red oak.
I think it was dying because of the impact of past years drought and soil compaction . . . it's beside my gravel drive.

Mark,
I'll do my best to whack out a couple of 3" oak pizzas :icon_thum

Roger you gotta learn to talk like a logger now - remember the golden rule when you speak "speak ben franklin" it's really amazing what a logger will do when you speak ben franklin.

you can almost smell that ben franklin can't you? and it's a cookie, not a pizza :gar-La;
