I need to purchase casters for my planer and tablesaw but don't have a clue as to how much they weight. I would like to make them moble with lock down casters. Rockler has a set on sale that will support about 440 pounds. What do you think? I wondered if the lock down was necessary considering how heavy the machines are.

The 440 pound capacity is more than adequate for those tools. And yes, you do want a pair to be locking casters so the tool won;t move unless you want it to move.

Lorraine,
Do you happen to have the link to the casters you are looking at? Are these the ones you ordered? I need some for my table saw.

I may be a little late on this, But Harbor Freight was running a sale on some 5" heavy duty castors. Something like $2~3 each. Don't know if they are still on sale or not.

I helped Canuck put his TS together and he had one of these. I was impressed and wish they were available when I bought my HTC bases.

I tried casters on a couple of shop cabinets and found that things just work better with HTC bases. Came to the conlusion that it was worth the extra bucks to have things roll smothly. Just my $.02.

Sorry, my catalog was old, the price went up to $70.00, better half said no. Back to the drawing board. What is wrong with 3/4 plywood with four locking casters? I thought it would work. I know they aren't cheap but I can get them locally and not pay shipping. I have several tools that I would like to have on wheels.

I bought 2 Deltas like Joe posted from Lowe's for about $55.00 dollars about 4 month ago. All I needed was some 1 x1/2 x 1x 1/2 hard wood runners

Lorraine, go to your local Tractor Supply or to Harbor Freight or Northern Tools and you'll find lots of decent swivel or fixed casters for less that $10 each. I've used HF casters on several shop cabinets without any failures -- here is a link to a decent one on sale right now: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Ok folks- THE BEST casters at THE BEST prices come from Hartville Tool. I have them under ALL my machinery (tablesaw, jointer, planer, shaper, bandsaw, drum sander, router table.) They are full ball bearing wheels, have really strong mounts and have dust shields over the bearings. I primarily use the $4.49 3" fixed wheels

which are rated at 220# (4" are rated at 275#) each at one side of my tools and a "Delta Style" step caster, $15.99 from Rockler at the other side.

This essentially makes a sturdy and cheap (less than $25) integral mobile base. After cutting off the top bracket, I attach the step caster to the underside of the front of the machine sub base. After removing the axle bolt and removing the wheel from the mount, I remount the Hartville casters in pieces of rectangular steel tubing which I mount directly to the back sides of the machinery sub base. Here is a pic from a thread about the base I made for my Unisaw. The pic shows the rear wheels but the step caster installation is slightly different, though, since I mounted the step caster on the extension table legs instead of the saw base.

I also used the $6.99 3" Hartville locking swivel casters, which are also rated at 220#, under my clamp rack.

My old ISP is going away so let me know if any pics do not appear (I may be seeing cache copies)

Here is what I finally did. There is this hardware store in Gaston, NC that has been there forever if you know what I mean. The saying around the area is, "If they ain't got it you can't get it." I bought four wheels, two that lock, less than 15.00. Now waiting for the husband to mount them to a 3/4 ply. Thanks for all the suggestions. If this works as well as we think it will, we will buy more and mount under a few more tools. Lorraine
