I got big ole wild black cherry tree out back that I'm afraid might have to come down. It's oozing sap out of one side about 30' up and it's so bad the sap running down on to the ground. With all this sweet sap stuff you know the bugs are going to feast. What's wrong with the tree? Can it be saved? or is it just old and tired? I would like to leave it on the stump but I will take it down if I have too.

Thanks

Without seeing it I would guess that it might have been infected with Shothole Borers. Or possibly it could be Sapsucker damage. There are many other mechanical means by which a tree could be wounded and "bleed". Just like a wound on a human, a wound on a tree opens up the tree to other infections that could lead to a quicker demise.
I have not found any good method to "save" trees. They are so large that an effective dose of "medicine" is very difficult to apply. I remember the great lengths my childhood town went to in trying to help the Elms dying of DED. Many of them looked like a ICU patient with all the tubes coming out of them and tanks of fertilizer/insecticide. They were eventually all cut down :cry_smile

Trees have a finite life, by they can live on indefinitely in the furniture/woodcrafts we make from them.

Dave:)

It's still on the stump - might be a bum log for all I know. I haven't paid much mind to it, till I noticed sappy ooze running down the trunk this past Sunday. When fell the tree, I'll know more about it.

Thanks

Hey Jeff,

If you do end up having to "put her down" and she's worthy of turning the mill in anger... I'd love to take some of that green, fresh off the saw wood off your hands.

No need to blow dry her hair to get her all prettied up like those big city folk like. :slap:

Backyard economic stimulus package. :icon_thum :icon_cheers

Ok gotcha Kevin, it'll be a while before I get the mill and bobcat back home, I'm still working on Tornado trees out at Jims.

Hey how did that 5/4 sycamore turn out? I hope it worked out well for you.

Thanks

I think it's unanimous, the tree has to come down because we all want some of the wood :gar-La;. Seriously, I'm in if and when it comes down.

Hey Jeff,

It's looking quite nice. I got it from you in December of 2007 so about 14 months ago. So with the 1 year per inch air dry rule, its only getting to be usable now.

I took some down from the attic rafters a month or two ago and planed some down for a quick look and ended up making a simple cutting board with the test piece. The grain looks sweet.

Maybe I'll take a photo of it and post it tonight when I get home.

Keep me in the loop.... I know how to get to your mill (when it was where it was when you were cutting the sycamore) !

Jeff if it doesn't work out and you want some cherry to log I may be able to help. My friend has asked me to cut more cherry trees of his farms and I hate making firewood out of all of it. I've got more cherry blanks drying than I can use and plenty of short logs with sealed ends to play with for a long time to come.
