Here was the Valentine's gift I made for my wife. It was my first time making a tulip or vase. The tulips were made after I watched Carl Jacobson's video. Summary of what I did was.
-Drill 3/4" hole about 3/4 of the way through the block and a 1/4" hole on the other.
-On the bandsaw cut a curved 'V' notch out on two sides.
-Turn a 3/4" jam chuck.
-Push tulip on jam chuck, slide tail stock up and turn to desired shape.
-Sand and finish.
Easy peasy!
The vase was turned from a small log of pecan. Do to it still being green I drilled out the pith on the bottom and inserted a piece of dried sapele to maybe help reduce the drying/cracking as it dries. Well it has been about two weeks in my house and it has a major crack that did not form from the pith but rather from a stem knot on the side. Told the wife I'll turn another and dry it in shavings proper. She said she likes the cracking, that it gives it character. I just hope it doesn't split in half.
