Things that make you go humm..

Is it just me or do Ridgid tools seem to being showing up in tool reviews more than ever? They are also receiving good reviews almost all the time. Not saying the reviews are not justified.

I have a couple of Ridgid hand tools and will probably buy the Ridgid OSS. The tools are certainly good but not spectacular.

I looked at some older magazine's, annual tool reviews, and did not find Ridgid mentioned at all. Has Ridgid changed, were they just overlooked or does being a staple of the BORG have anything to do with it.

Just wondering!

I think they must have started to get some decent engineers to work for them. I've seen a trend of Ridgid tools getting better, and they are also on the cheaper side, which combined I think ends up making them a good value.

Certainly the Home Depot carrying them raises their visibility, but I don't think that's the reason for the good reviews. Lowe's has been showcasing Dewalt tools, and except for their planers I've seen a trend of them getting worse reviews.

A few months ago I took a gamble on a Ridgid TS. I have never owned a single tool by Ridgid, and this was a large buy for me. I am pleased to report that my gamble paid off. I love my TS and have been looking around at other Ridgid tools. I thinks some brands are most hype and name then good quality. I am sorry to say that some of the Dewalt tools I use have not quite been up to task. Others however, go far and above expectations.

I do ALOT of research before each major tool buy. I look at everything I can from reviews to feedback to talking with others. I guess it just pays to research each and every tool before buying. Dewalt taught me that one...

It's only one tool but I am disappointed with my 1/4 sheet sander by Rigid. I was not too disappointed when it died after a year or so (less than the 2 year warranty) because I thought a repair center would fix it. I was wrong. They kept it 3 or 4 weeks and it still doesn't work. I could try again but I decided just to buy another sander. My only other tool by Rigid is a shop vacumn which works OK.

Speakering of sanders, I have the Ridgid 5" ROS, which I bought only because I had a HD gift card and it was cheap. I've always liked it, but this month it got Editor's Choice from Popular Woodworking.

I have the Ridgid table saw, jointer, and planer. I have been thoroughly pleased with all three. I chose not to do the band saw as they get some bad reviews due to excessive vibration. Ridgid has their own forum that does a good job of discussing Ridgid tools.

IIRC, HD owns Ridgid Tools outright. That's why you don't see 'em anywhere else.

I have their 12" compound sliding miter saw, dust collection is not great but has run about 8 months without problems. It came with a lifetime waranty but I have never had to deal with a service issue so it may not be a good deal.

I like Ridgid, I have been very happy with the TP1330 planer, 5"ROS, shop vac and 15" drill press (before I sold it). The OSS gets rave reviews. But, some items like their band saw apparently weren't so great until recently. It all depends where the product is made before it gets the Orange treatment. It's unfortunate, but a brand is very volatile these days. Someone may decide the table saw sells so well, they can cut down on quality a little to save $4 in the manufacturing process.

But, for now, I think you could do worse than outfitting your shop with all Ridgid tools!
