This post is about a couple chairs I built for my son Tom. They are oak and are based upon plans in Woodsmith 15, May 1981. The wedges in the six through mortise and tenon joints are walnut. There are also 8 blind mortise and tenon joints in each chair. My secondary purpose for this post is to prove I can include some pictures - I am not good at that but will hopefull learn. First picture is pieces to make one chair laying on my BT3100 table saw:

The next picture is a glued up frame in my typically messy shop:

The next picture is a back view of a completed chair. I like the rays in the red oak. Each back slat is made of 4 pieces of 5/4. My little homemade bandsaw struggled with oak this thick.

Lastly, this is a front view.

Wow, nice chairs. I really like the straight forward design to them. Are the back slats as curved as they show in the pictures??
Great work, and posting the pic gives you an extra bonus. There will be a cherry on top of your sundae tonight...or should be :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap

Great job on the chair. Your son will have a family treasure that will last for generations.

The back slats have about 7/8 inch removed at the center. The off-cut was 3/4 wide so I glued it to the back and used it to bolt the seat on with. They are pretty comfortable but I find everything in Woodsmith to be designed for shorter people than we have in our family. I raised the seat 2 inches but did not raise the back slats. When I make the next two, I plan to raise them 1 1/2 inches.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Nice work on the chairs! I have only attempted Adirondack's to date, but want to move to something more complex.

Any other changes you going to make? Joinery, fasteners, etc? I have made a lot of Woodsmith stuff, but at times find their joinery decisions to be less than stellar.

The horizontal pieces on either side of the seat have a fake wedged tenon in the plans in the location of the lap joint that joins the legs to these pieces. I don't like fake things in my projects so I did not do it. Otherwise, I used joints of the type and size Woodsmith had in their plans. I cut my mortises with my Jet hollow chisel mortiser instead of the drilling and chiseling the talk about but I don't think it matters much how you cut the joints.
