With having to be careful about everything these days, I wonder if the space between the safety rails looks to large? Do you think she could get her head stuck in there? I am using this picture as a reference, so you could see the space (I think about 4" between) and her size. Am I worrying to much?

I think that you are worrying to much. That sweet little noggin is much larger than 4" in dia. Plus at her age they don't roll around much nor cram their heads into corners to remind them of the tight quarters of thier first 10 months of life.

Tom, if the space between the upper and lower safety rails is only 4" I believe you should be okay. Maybe someone can chime in with what the building code states in regards to the spacing of balusters. I believe the code was established based on the same concerns you have.

Tom,

I think you're worrying too much. I'm not sure about funniture requirements, but on railings, balustrades, stairs, etc. the limit is 4" and a sphere is used for the size. On stairs, the triangle formed by the bottom rail of the balustrade, the step tread, and the riser, the limit is a 6" sphere.

I'd bet you're safe

... remind me to tell you how my daughter (when she was nine) got stuck between a mattress and the bedroom wall... I know it's a great story because it STILL embarrasses her when I tell it.

BTDT, when I was a child, but it was a bunk bed and my parents found me hanging by my armpits asleep when they checked on me before going to bed. Seems I had to go to the bathroom and slid off the wrong side of the bed. It's a good thing that no one was sleeping in the bottom bunk...like I said, I had to go to the bathroom

I think you're fine, but you're absolutely right to think about that issue. According to the best info I can find from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, that space is probably recommended to be no more than 3½" (for a crib, there should be no spaces greater than 2-3/8"). In your situation I really think you don't have anything to worry about, but the bed might not be suitable for a smaller child.

When I made my baby gate, the spacing I used matched the spacing on the balusters for the stairs. I actually tested to see if the baby's head would fit at any angle through a gap that size (not on the gate!) -- it wasn't even close.

If you want to worry even more about your children... take a look at this link. I think it's a pretty good reference for anyone thinking of making furniture for children.
