Thinking too much

Right now I'm between projects and have started thinking too much as I am sometimes prone to do. I have a 10 in Jet contractors table saw with a 52 in right table extension. I really don't need all that table . It just ends up piled with cut offs and takes up valuable floor space. I've thought about cutting it down some but since I've got it, why not put it to use? I know one can use the extension as a router table. How about mounting a portable table saw in a hole cut to fit. You could say keep a dado blade on it and save time changing blades. The fence could be slid across the lowered blade and be used for both saws. Have I lost my mind or has any body actually tried it?

I haven't tried it, but have seen posts where others have. It seems like a neat and efficient system.

Seems like a neat idea to me as well. I too waste space with the 52" rip, but it is good for having a play to lay boards as you are going through the process. I cannot bring myself to cut the rails.

Sounds like a great idea to me, you would still have the 52" to the right of balde if needed and have a quick setup for a dado set.

I saw a post on WN about a guy who did that. I can't remember if he did it with two table saws side by side or one in the other like you are thinking. But either way if properly executed, it sounds like a great idea.

First, I wouldn't use a portable saw as most don't have the guts to pull a dado set regularly. Also, how often do you use cut the exact same width dado. Most likely, you will have to adjust dado set EVERYTIME you use it. If your heart is set on doing this, buy a used contractor's without any extensions and mount on right side. If your CS is right tilt, this would give you the same effect as a left tilt saw for bevel cuts. Personally, I like having two seperate saws.
