Well it may just be early January and the weather outside is frightful. But soon it will warm up and the birds will be singin' again and it will be time for the 4th Annual North Carolina Woodworker Spring Picnic. It's time to start thinking about it.

First we need to set a date. To avoid the inevitable cat herdin' that will occur with date choosing I suggest what has worked the best for us in the past – the weekend between Mother's Day and Memorial Day, Saturday May 16th. I know that calling a date outright isn't going to work best for everybody, but I would hope that with ~5 months notice that y'all can block out a space on your calendar and come. I am hoping for the best turn out ever :eusa_danc.

As far as the food is concerned. In the past Steve and Gail Coles have provided some extremely fine catering from Red Hot and Blue :eusa_clap:eusa_clap. There has been some talk among folks about doing this years picnic as a pig picking. I really like the idea :icon_thum. North Carolina Woodworker can provide the pig, and I know there are some folks out there – BruceW, ScottS, IveyP, MikeD and others that can provide the cooker and the expertise to make it one of the finest :eusa_pray:eusa_pray. I would like to see this happen along with a general contribution pot luck. We'll cook the meat and y'all can bring the sides...especially the Deviled Eggs with Horseradish :eusa_danc.

In the past having it at Jordan Lake just outside of Raleigh has worked well. To be able to have it at the same sweet location as last year we need to go ahead and book it now.
Seeing as I have am working on taking over the Webmaster role from Papa Smurf  it is now my job to pull this off. I ain't retired and don't have as much time as he has to single-handedly pull this off myself. So I am asking for a few volunteers to head up a committee that will be known as the Picnic Planners :eusa_pray. If there are any volunteers or willing victims/nominees that would like to step forward and help me with this task it would be greatly appreciated. You will be rewarded with an extra helping of BBQ and the most sincere thanks from all the members of the site....I might even give you a hug :5grouphug.
As far as the details of the picnic are concerned. If it is to be held at Jordan Lake, there can't be any formal buying and selling (i.e. No lumber runs), and there is No alcohol allowed. The door prize drawings are still being considered along with the Swap and Trade table. It would be great to have displays of the fine woodworks that our members produce, so bring your stuff. Seeing stuff in person beats a picture any day. And as always the picnic is free to all members, LOYLs, kids and friends. If you feel you must donate or contribute please read the above...that will be the best way to do it.

So what y'all think and who is going to be the first to head up the Picnic Planning committee??
Don't be shy

Thanks for your attention!!!

Somethings need to be arranged in advance and cannot be potluck, e.g., beverages, coolers, ice, table and chairs, and plates and utensils. I think Dave O could use help coordinating these types of things. I will try to be there early again to help set up.

Phillip you can be a lot of help :icon_thum Help with coordinating who bring what, like Doug says.
Also folks will probably post what kind of food they are bringing and that could use some organizing to make sure that we don't have too much of something, and not enough of others.
Thank-you for joining the committee :icon_thum:icon_thum

Dave-OIf you are thinking about Jordan Lake again this year, I have some information that might be helpful. If we rent a regular 100 person shelter the general rule is to charge extra for all people over 100 and each car load has to pay $5.00 to get in to the park and they cannot insure entrance if the park fills up. Now they have another area called WHITE OAK and with it only people frpm our group can enter the area without extra an extra charge, the price inclueds a ticket booth operator to control others from entering, it also seats 600 people, there is horse shoe pits and a net and they will supply one volley ball,if it is warm enough there is a private beach near the shelter, there are also 2 grills, lots of parking, and may be some other things I might have forgotten. Now the price is a little high but the extras are good enough to make it worth it to us especially if we are hopeing for a lot more people than the other years......I think the price is $1200. Dick wants me to tell you that the constuction of the shelter is really something to see and most woodworker would find it quite interesting.
Now if you can meet me or us there one day to get a look at it I can make arrangements to get us in, it is usually not open unless it is being used but we are sure that we can arrange something.
I will be happy to help set up the renting it since I live almost right on top of it.
Let us know if we can help in any way.

Stuart I will take you up on that offer. Can I still shake your hand :icon_thum

A handshake and an extra serving of BBQ will be fine Dave. You just aren't built quite right for me to get into that hugging stuff with you.

Rita/Dick thanks for the info. That could be a great place to have this years picnic. I will have to talk with Steve and see what he has worked up in years past, and determine if we can warrant such a large venue. I am glad to have ya'll on the team as inside informants :icon_thum

DaveO, count the Miller's in to work and bring. I think we need to really look into Rita's idea as we have grown a lot since last May.

A picnic sounds so warm but yet it's so cold. Where is Al Gore when you need him? We could use a little global warming right about now... - I like DaveO so much better than Al Gore. Al Gore don't talk about no NCWoodworker picnic in the warm sunshine of NC now does he? Nope... but DaveO does  I'll do what I can to pitch in to make the 4th annual picnic a success like all the prior ones, just let me know what I can do to help.

Dave, I'll be glad to make my cooker available. Why don't we divvy up BBQ-Master responsibilities amongst a few members? We can share my cooker (or two if another one is available) and cook up a variety of goodies in addiiton to the pig.

Perhaps 4 - 6 large pork shoulders with different sauces, etc...

Dick/Rita: Does Jordan Lake have any rules against bringing in a pig cooker?
