As the sun sets on the snow we’ve encountered this winter I finally could find the driveway to my latest project.
I added crown molding, chair molding and beauty molding to this home.

As I was wrapping this project up the customer pulled the trigger on an additional project of a built-in shelving unit to display their collection of aged bourbons along with some other well aged whiskey.
A fairly simple piece with one issue. The staircase is a tight space and I work alone. So I chose to mill it in their garage and build it in place. Here are the results.

There is enough room for 5 shelves two deep bottled fifths of whiskey per section. Each section is 30” wide and the height is eight feet. It will be dyed and stained to match the other cabinets in the room. I’m not the finisher on this one. However overall I’m pleased with how this project turned out.

I would LOVE to see that built-in finished! (probably even better to see it filled with its intended victims too! LOL)
I would find it hard to turn it over unfinished...

All looks great!
I installed some beauty molding (never heard it called that) and amazed how it changed the whole look of the dining room!!

Base cap has been called many things. Some folks call this wainscoting but it’s not. It does give you the look of wainscoting. That said I have seen this one finished with saturated monotone colors. It looks good.

Very, very nice work. Really sets that room off. The cabinet is a great addition - the radiused corners at the top is a nice touch.

I love the inside rounded corners. It’s a simple thing, but it takes it to another level.

Seems the internet also calls it “wall molding”. A good job in any case.

I’m curious- is there some logic to determine the number of “rectangles” laid out on each wall? Or is that considered “artistic license”?

The pattern for these and logic? That’s scary. OK, bad joke. The logic and artistic license has everything to do with overall aesthetic appeal and working around obstacles such as electrical outlets. Over all to give a balanced appearance. Sometimes compromises have to made in an effort to not move these obstacles. A good example is working around this return air vent. The customer will be placing a large sideboard on the wall. So I set the wall with a center panel that will frame the area over and behind that piece of furniture with the flanking panels set to balance the space.

In this example I had to balance the panels around an outlet. I would have preferred to do two panels but I had to do three. The margin between the panels and the perimeter I set by drawing on the wall several times and taping corner mockups on the wall to see what the customer as well as myself felt the best with.

The choice to use a larger single panel to the left was based on the customers desire for furniture placement in that space. Again sometimes compromises are necessary. From the second angle the panels look more balanced in relation to the other walls.

This final example on either side of this window there was an outlet and I had to use a larger reveal to accommodate these. Once the window treatments are installed the room will be more balanced.
The other thing to keep in mind is the wall color and this trim will be the same color. The look is for texture.
