Stanley Expansive Bit Sharpening

Not intending this bit to serve as a metal detector, but I managed to use it for that purpose! It worked very well on 60 y/o yellow pine framing lumber prior to filling it.

I found one video on sharpening, but am curious of any other options or suggestions on round stones. The video seems to suggest grinding the edges off of a rectangular stone while I’m finding stones that are already rounded.

What size and grit of round stones do you need. I can go through mine and see if I have duplicate pieces

Well, that vid is about worthless. I couldn’t even see what he was trying to do. Fortunately I know how to sharpen a bit.

Thanks Mike! That is very generous of you!

The radius is 5/8”.

I was thinking of starting with 220 or 400 (and goong up from there) since I managed to knick the blade. It’s hard to capture, but it’s most visible from this angle.

Any suggestions on sharpening are appreciated too. I’ve only sharped my plane blades and chisels at this point. The wings on this bit look like they’re going to be fun!

I have one round. Must have given the rest away. If this will help I’ll get it to you. I will be in Durham tomorrow Saturday. 1/2” 150 grit.

Thanks Mike!

That would work but it’s going to be a while before I’m in NC (I’m down in Cola, SC).

I’m thinking of ordering this setup after seeing the prices for individual slip stones:

Any opinion on these?

Lanski makes a good sharpening system. I have their diamond set. That is a good assortment of grits.
