Small router plane fix

The Veritas Small Router Plane is an indispensable tool but it has a propensity for the blade to twist during use despite how hard one turns its knurled brass knob.

After putting up with that annoyance for years, I fixed mine today by replacing that knurled knob with a 1/4-28 hex lock nut.

After tightening the nut with a wrench just once after setting the initial depth, the depth of cut can be easily increased with light taps of a brass plane hammer.

That would be annoying. Is there a reason for allowing the blade to rotate?

I wonder why Lee Valley didn’t address that issue say by grinding a flat on the back of the stem of the blade.

A flat was my first tjhought until I looked closer. The nut pulls the round blade shaft into a V in the body.
Also, the shaft needs to symmetrical in cross-section so that the blade can be rotated 180 into the outboard routing position.

I would grind four small flats to fit the V from either direction. They would not have to be very wide, just enough to orient the shaft.

Well, it sounds like pop pop fixed the problem, but I was more wondering why Lee Valley didn’t make a design change.

They suggested sandpapering the shaft but that did not work for me.
