Site Performance

Morning Neal. Just an FYI - site has been very slow to respond for a couple of days.

Example - it took the main page roughly 20 seconds to load when I clicked the link. After that, it probably took a solid 2 minutes to login and click thru to get to this page so I could write this. Don't think it's on my end as other sites are responding normally.

Please let me know if you believe it IS on my end. Thanks!

I'm seeing the same thing, so it's not a user thing. I hadn't noticed anything last week,

Same here. It started happening for me around the end of last week. Sometimes 30+ seconds to load a page.

Looks like things have settled down and performance is normal. I did see the database engine was consuming a lot of cpu cycles.

I like where you're going with that thought..

... and the next time I visit, it's back to 30+ seconds to load each page.

Are we on shared hosting by any chance?
We have our own server using Amazon Web Services. There send to be some extra activity in the database that is causing the sluggishness.

It seems to be very on-and-off. Right now it's fine. The last couple times I was here it was slow.

Working fine right now but it’s intermittent for me too. Could it be a corrupt file or index? Odd this is going on without the host noting it as you couldn’t have picked a better one.

I recently saw someone say that AI bots (for learning, not search indexing) had started to bog down the performance of a forum he ran. Maybe that's what's happening here.

Apparently there are a couple of files that you can add to stop them.

In the access logs, I am seeing some AI connections. I've attempted to block those IP addresses, but the access count was still increasing this morning.

Are you using the robots.txt file to block? That usually likes to have the service listed and the /disallowed option invoked. That way it doesn't depend upon finding the specific IP's doing the scanning. It simply tells what ever AI type it is "you aren't allowed to scan this site."

@Craptastic, I'll have to double check to see if it's there, and update according to Xenforo platform.

Yeah I'm not sure what that platform supports but most linux/unix web services should support robots.txt. It's really kind of become a defacto standard over the last year or so. So much so that it's being woven into IIS and other platforms.
