Simple vase from oak

I cut this "stem" in December '25 gathering supplies for X-mas trees. Upon looking at its unique features, I decided a vase was in order.

Oak vase 10" tall. The ID accepts a 1" dia. glass vial readily. The top is about 2-1/4 OD and the bottom is 2-3/4" OD.

Mahoney's oil finish.

It has been sitting inside the house for awhile, warping. More character, I think.

I can't quite conceive what is happening one that one side, it looks like a section is missing. Is it not a complete piece or is there a split all the way up one side?
Is the bottom solid or open? Did you hollow it out and then cut a slit out of the side? It is very unusual...

What do you use for deep hollowing?
That is currently my biggest challenge.

It is a nature caused split on one side almost to the bottom and the bark almost covered the split. As it dried, the split opened and one side kinda folded inwards. The split also opened up on the opposite side as it dried.

I used Hunter tools for most of the hollowing and finished with a Lyle Jamison system.

The vase is a bit "out there" for non-traditionalists. Pretty cool idea to let it do its own thing!
