Another water heater question for you all, sorry :p

Anyway, I have a crawlspace with a direct vent water heater that has a vent pipe that goes up a few inches and then horizontal a foot or two through a cinder block wall. It just died and needs a replacement.

A friend has an extra water heater that I could get cheap, except it's not direct vent. I've been told that having a horizontal pipe to the outside means you need a direct vent water heater.

My question is, would adding a kit like one of the HS series at this link to a standard venting water heater, allow it to be used in a horizontal side vented situation?

I can't get a good answer from a plumber that wants $3k for a tankless install instead.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 50 gallon gas heater in the basement. It uses the fan similar to your link. Been in 10 years and haven't had a problem.
