Should the jointer fence touch the outfeed table?

I am tring to set the fence on my grizzly g0490 8" jointer but I am not sure if it should be supported by the outfeed table or if it should be suspended just above so that it can adjust freely.

Any thoughts?

Hello David,

Yes the fence rides on the outfeed table, I have the same jointer with the BYRD shelix head. And was told by a friend with a Delta model, exactly the same unit almost withhis BYRD Shelix cutterhead and he said that he never moves the fence from the widest position it will joint. He's had it since 1995 and it's been very good to him.

If you don't have the shelix head, I would put some thick slick tape or something else slick on the bottom of the fence where it rubs on the outfeed bed or else it will mare the outfeed bed. The bed is just to pretty to get all marred up.
