My shop sink base is done except for the door pulls and stops/catches and painting of the toe kick black. I'm still looking for the right (cheap) knobs. All in all it came out pretty well and I learned allot- and will use that knowledge finishing the back bench. I got a little lazy/careless trimming the drawers fronts and still need to do some final alignment of them before I use brad nails to fix them to the drawer boxes. The finish is Minwax "Aged oak" oil stain and two coats of satin wipe-on poly (which is not yet fully dry
). I haven't decided if I will use steel wool on everything and put on a third coat of poly or not.
The center section is just a blankout, but I decided to treat it like a drawer front using the same faux box joint detail and cup pulls. There is not enough space behind it for one of those small, hinged, utensil drawers.
After seeing the the appearance of the stained oak, I wish I had culled through my stack to see if I could come up with more quartersawn or rift sawn boards. I really do not like the look of the plainsawn oak that is on the door panels and some of the stiles and rails.
The drawer boxes were made from 1/2" solid oak (cheaper than buying ply). I used full extension Accuride slides that I got cheap from a NC guy who was selling them on some of the WW forums. I'm still learning how to mount these suckers easily and accurately. I guess I should break down and buy one of the Krieg magnetic jigs.
The drawer fronts need a little final adjusting. The cup pulls are Lowes' El Cheapos. They didn't have them in black so I painted them with some rattle can satin black- at less than $2.00 per pull I couldn't pass them up.
