I found your site several weeks ago and am really impressed! It's just what a woodworker needs. I have had wood fever for over 30 years and have never had time to enjoy. I'm planning an elaborate shop and buying a lot of tools for what I want to do. That would be 18th century style furniture and some repair work as well. I have worked with a good friend in the past who taught me a lot about mahogany and how to work it. He was a master at rice beds, highboys, lowboys, and chests on chests. Why do talented hands seem to die too early.

After reading some of the threads posted, I can see that there are many out there like myself who are interested and just need a push. I'm really looking foward to typing with anyone.

Sincerely,
Benchdog

Welcome Charlie,

We're happy to see you join our band of woodworkers -- don't hesitate to ask questions ranging from shop layout, tool recommendations or techniques -- we have lots of talented people in the forum and we like to share that knowledge. Be sure to ask for a Photo Gallery (click on Other Links) and read the FAQs on that subject in the FAQ forum. Then you'll be able to upload pics to share with others.

hey benchdog,

Sounds like great stuff and an admirable persuit. I think its fasinating what people have done as pre woodworkers and how it influences their woodwork. Working in somthing so detailed as phone systems i'm sure you would be successful at period work.

The loss of our mentors emphises the need for us to mentor others especially in a time when people with old world skills are disappearing. I have three kids, ages of six, four, two and i take time to build with all. Each owns a hammer, the older two, real but small and the youngest a toy to start pretending. The next group of wood workers is up to us.

As far as the work see if you can find anything on the Smithonians Conservation Analitical Labratories (sorry about the spelling) but they specialize in historic work but to the top degree. When they want to understand a joint in an unknown piece they have it x-rayed in house. Our tax dollars at work. They have great stuff but I don't know how they have it accessable to the public.

Welcome Charlie! I'm sorry to hear about your friend, I hope you can carry on his craftsmanship. We're good at pushing, especially when it comes to decking out a shop! We have some pretty good reviews and many people may already own some of the tools you may be considering. It always helps to have a comment, either good or bad from someone already using a tool you want to buy. Please join us often.

Welcome - we're so glad you've joined us. I can't agree more with the fact the the future of craftsmanship (all crafts) is really up to us. We've got to get younger people involved. I look forward to learning a lot from you and think you'll find us both informative and entertaining (not necessarily in that order).
