Scrub plane query

When I bought this old scrub plane, I assumed that one would push just it like other Western planes. However, after a short time my right hand would hurt from contact with the edges of the iron. Now, I pull the plane instead with a grip (no photographer was handy) like this. My question is was this plane originally designed to be pushed or pulled?

Based on how far back the iron is, I would say yes - like a Japanese plane.
Good observation that got me curious. The mouth is 50% back from the toe rather than the usual 40% for a push plane.

It's a German-style plane, so it's most likely supposed to be used on the push, but if pulling works better for you, so be it.
