Toured MSA in Jacksonville NC today. Two interesting things:
1) US fire fighters like leather helmets. Made in the US in NC. If I hadn't seen it, I would have had a hard time believing it. Sewn together, chemically sealed with a flammable chemical, finished coated with a non-flammable treatment and then painted to order. OBTW, Europe prefers "space helmets".
2) MSA makes a forced air full faced respirator in NC. It looks like a gas mask and is used in the nuclear industry. Of course there was a suggestion to adapt it for wood turning.

Short but good visit.

Way back in the 70's I was a paid fire chief and for a brief time back then aluminum helmets were a thing using the traditional FDNY leather configuration as a template. It was quickly discovered that they were too lightweight to stay on and offer impact protection. The other problem was rapid heat transfer to the wearer's noggin. :swoon: Another advantage of leather is the fairly easy attachment of accessories like eye shields.
