Routing advice

Hi all,

I have a chunk of wood from an old beam from a barn. I want to route it out this end of it and make a cigar ashtray. Can I route it with that crack or should I fill it with epoxy first?

i would fill with epoxy first if for only one reason....sanding will be less. i assume you will be using some sort of bowl or cove bit. if the void is already filled, then the epoxy areas get the same sanding treatment as everywhere else.

**putting epoxy on end grain can tricky and cause staining. can you cut off a small piece of this as a test first?

OK, thanks. I wasn't going to epoxy at all if I could get away with it but it sounds like I should to stabilize it.

I'd definately suggest filling this with epoxy.

Haven't thought about making wooden ashtrays before. Thank you for the great idea.
