As noted above, not having the wood flat will create the step when moving the table saw fence for a 3/16" cut using the blade . A properly sharpened combination blade, either alternate top bevel or triple chip, has a raker tooth that should create a flat bottom cut in the manner that you are using it. A straight alternate top bevel only or triple chip only blade will leave a peak in the middle, or bevels on the side, respectively.

Perhaps using a 3/16" router bit, either with a fence or in a router table, would also eliminate the extra step of needing a router plane, which I like using as much as the next guy, but why work harder than you have to?

I can see it if you enjoy working with only hand tools, a version of "woodworking unplugged", but if you are already using a table saw to begin with.................

FWIW. YMMV.

Thanks, I have been using a flat grind Freud blade. Very likely, that when I have the issue, its my wood prep or pressure.

Pretty cool video though on making one. Got to love a tool rabbit trail. I watched the video and now 4 more ways to make it popped up.. only so many hours in a day...lol

This might be a good option. It was for me, I had trouble coming up with a blade. I also think a kit would help you decide between “do I need …?” or “ do I want to buy a new tool?”

I have the small Veritas router plane. Got it during a sale and had not used it until I was making mortises for door hinges. Used chisels and mallet for the initial work. I have to say it made the clean up for the depth of those mortises so easy. I have not done much hand tool work, but this was a game changer for me.
