Router Bit for Slots

I'm just getting into woodworking and wanting to make a few jigs with slots. Which is the correct router bit to use on the table? I was thinking a spiral upcut bit. Would that be the right bit? Thanks.

If the top of the slot is important (as in no tearout) I suggest a downcut spiral bit.
If it's not important (tearout/fuzz OK) then any spiral bit or slot cutter bit will do.
After posting I remembered that MLCS has got some very good tutorials.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like spiral cut is the way to go. I'll go ahead an upcut and downcut to cover all bases.:)
