I have been woodworking for about 8 years after retiring 13 years ago. My wife and I moved to Horse Shoe (Henderson County) less than 3 years ago in search of a better climate and a relaxed life style. Our last winter in Maryland was extreme with over 30" of snow in one storm and drifts to the top of the doors. (I still can't figure why we brought our snow thrower with us.) We found a house that suited us, but there was no woodshop. Our neighbor is a contractor, so he brought in his people and moved trees and earth to make a level spot for a shop. Yeah, we're in the mountains.
Now, all I do is woodworking and mow a little grass when it's warm enough for it to grow. I look forward to meeting some of the woodworkers in the area and sharing ideas with those on the internet.

Welcome Roy! Are the Mountains of NC any warmer than Maryland? Glad you moved to our State and joined our little club!

you're a lucky man to have such capable people nearby! From one northerner to another (semi) northerner, welcome! I don't miss the snow either. What I wouldn't give to be in your situation to do nothing but mow grass and woodwork all day....sound like a great life! I think you'll enjoy yourself here, there's a really good group of people....just watch out for a creeping inexplicable urge to spend your last dime on new tools. It's contagious!

Welcome Roy!!!

I moved here from Canada, 22 years ago and ain't never regretted it!:-D :-D :-D I know how you are feelin' about the snow. Just keep that lawnmower tuned up. I think that I only put mine away for 2 months during the year. (You may want to trade in that snowblower for a good biscuit joiner or whatever. - BTW, I can recall moving several snow shovels and long johns with me. Think that I have only used the snow shovel twice in 22 years!:eusa_clap )

Glad to hear that your new shop is underway!:eusa_clap Please keep us posted with your progress. I am sure that you will enjoy hanging out with this bunch of talented NC woodworkers!

See ya,

Wayne

Welcome to the site, Roy. First, I agree that moving out of the snow belts of the North is a very positive change -- I'm from Rochester, NY originally and don't miss the 120" of snow each year. Second, you are the second newbie today from the area -- a guy just joined who lives in Fletcher. I live in the NW side of Hendersonville and visited Steve D (Steve DeWeese) at his home in Horse Shoe this evening to pick up a freebie cabinet from a fellow member (Insomniac) in Hickory (part of the NCWW transfer system). We welcome you to the site and hope you'll share pictures of your upcoming shop with everyone (be sure to click on Other Links on the main menu bar and request a Photo Gallery) and some of your projects, too. Around here, "no pics, it didn't happen!"

And be sure to click on Member Control Panel and select Group Memberships -- then sign up for the Western NC Woodworkers Club Interest Group -- we are trying to get a club started in the area where we can meet and share ideas and projects and techniques. We'd love to have you join with us.

Greetings from the sprawling metropolis of Horse Shoe! Which stop light do you live near? Welcome aboard and it's good to have another local join the fray. I'm striving for retirement but have a way to go yet. We'll have to get together sometime soon.

Howdy Neighbor:

I'm the guy in Fletcher that joined yesterday. That's awsome that you are building you own shop. Is it finished? Are you gonna do some of the construction yourself ? Any pics?
