I visited Kids Making It in Wilmington this weekend, and was talking with Frankson about some ideas of projects that the kids could make that would be quick and be able to be sold easily. I mentioned this conversation to my wife on the drive back to Clayton, and she suggested that I figure out how to make a balancing wine bottle holder. I messed around with the angle a little and the distance of the hole from the bottom and came up with this. About 15 minutes of work:-D

Now no one steal my entry into the project contest next weekend at the picnic :eusa_naug :-D See this thread http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/whats.going/member.announcements/2935-kids.making.contest.html.

I'm looking forward to seeing what others can come up with.

Dave:)

Dave, that is really cool! There's a contest this weekend at the picnic?:eusa_thin

Yep, Frankson is offering a KMI t-shirt for the best idea of projects that the kids participating in KMI can make and sell.
The competion is gonna be fierce :-D

Neat idea Dave. Does the weight/size of the bottle change any of the dimensions? Keep up the great work!
Take care,

Randy, I would think that size and design of the bottle could have some effect on the balance, I know that the wood thickness does. That's a bottle of "kickin' chicken" 47 Pound Roster Pinot Noir , and a bottle of Mont-Pellier Pinot Noir also balances just fine. I don't know what it would do with your Dom Perignon bottles :-D

You obviously have me confused with WG or someone else. I was wondering if my Boone's Farm or MD20 bottles would work:eusa_thin .....
Thanks for the reply

Dave... does the fullness.. or emptness of the bottle affect the balance?

In my house there are only two types of bottle: full and finished :drunken_s

I don't think that it would work with a bottle that has been opened and was less than finished.

Dave,

Is that the birds eye maple...

don't know how to break this to you but, KMI currently makes/sells variations of the wine bottle stand in the KMI shop (one volunteer designed a surf board design that's been popular).

Not sure of the design principles but, I have noticed that different designs orient the bottles in different positions to maintain balance and yes, champagne bottles are much heavier than wine bottles.

See you at the picnic

you know...we don't have any child size adirondack....

D'oh :eusa_doh: , I knew it was too good of a project not to be taken already. Don't worry I have another one in the works along with, hopefully, a kids Adirondack chair.
The wood is QSWO, BTW
It was great to meet you this weekend, and I look forward to talking with you more on this subject at the picnic.

I need to modify the size a little, it seems my wife has very thick stemmed wine glasses :eusa_doh:

That was in one of the recent ww magazines. Never really thought about the thickness of the stems though.

Dave,

I like it!
Should be quick to make, while maintaining quality control (i.e. pin router).

Looks like we'll have some good projects to consider at the picnic.

Jeff (frankson)

ps don't push for the kids A. chair, if time is tight. I'd like to see the updated missonesque table
