Quick answer needed????

I have a 11.75" piece of curly maple, most of the curl is on the outer edges. The box I am currently working on needs a 8" lid. Should I rip it down the middle a glue the 2 halves back together or just trim off one edge to get my 8" width. I am gonna do something tonight so hope y'all are paying attention and typing fast. Thanks for the advice!

Dave ... how would the graining look if you ripped it down the middle, then placed the "outside" edges together in the middle .... then trim both of the new outside edges to get your 8"?

Thats kinda my thought. It is very flat sawn in the center with big cathedrals and gets curl on the edges. If I ripped the center out and glued the outer pieces together, I would get max curl, but the ribbons wouldn't flow across the board as well.

Earl, that is a great idea:icon_thum But it is really hard to capture the chatoyance of the curly figure with a camera. It tends to move as you look at it, kinda like the stripes in the turf on a baseball field.

Well I decided to rip the board and glue it back together to give me the most curly figure. Here's my results:

A little closer, it's only got a MS wipe down, I still have a lot of machining to do.

I still see the joint:eusa_snoo I am probably being overly critical. But the other way would have resulted in a board with curly figure on one side and flat sawn on the other, so I am happy with the results:-D

Just a small Cedar chest. I got bored on Sunday and re-sawed a Cedar 6 x 6 into some 4/4 boards and slapped them together. The Maple will be the lid. Probably will have it done before next Tues. but I am bringing in my jewelry box for the show and tell....don't want to show off to much:lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
