I've only turned a couple of acrylic pens now but the last one has me concerned. It has a very strong chemical-like odor. It has been at least a day since I finished it but it still stinks (so much that I had to leave it out in the shop).

I've noticed this smell from the other pens I turned out of acrylic but never this strong before. I used the same process too...wet sanded to 12000 micromesh, rubbed out with plastic polish (Hut brand), and buffed with Renaissance wax.

Any ideas how to get rid of this smell and/or avoid it in the future?

From the ones I've turned (only about 20 though), the only ones that still stunk were the cheapo's I got online free with another order. They made your hands stink. I think just a cheap plastic (that probably melted a bit when being turned) ... just a guess.

Is it sort of a sweet chemical smell? It may be the styrene in the acrylic from the extrusion process so. It's not really harmful, and will probably go away. It may also be from the stuff added into the mixture more than the acrylic itself.
