Question about an eggbeater hand drill

I have a Stanley Yankee No. 1530AX hand drill. It tends to skip when I drill with it so I thought I would try to tighten up the handle gear. I turned the axial screw but nothing happened. The way the drill is made the screw goes into the frame but the mechanism is in the way of seeing how the screw goes in. So I disassembled the drill and found the screw is not a screw but appears to be just a press fit. So I don't see any way to tighten the drill up so I can drill with it without it skipping. Are there any solutions to my situation? Thanks in advance.

Brad the end of the pin just a little so it will grip when you tap it in. Go ahead and clean the gears, paint if you like and grease everything while you have it apart.

Could we see pictures? Most (all) of mine are Millers Falls or Goodell-Pratt and I'm curious as to your problem.
