Q about Hitachi C10FL 10" Table Saw

My Craftsman 10" bench top saw is 11 yrs old, so I am looking to upgrade. I like the Hitachi stationary table saw, except for the location of the power switch. The switch is covered,and in an emergency, I would have to reach under the table, bending to the point I am eye-level with the table. Any ideas for altering this? If I remove the cover, I still would need a horizontal piece of wood about 10" long, if I could add a shop-made "switch extension" I could bump with my knee. That seems a bit much to do to a new saw.

You could fabricate a big emergency shut off bar that you could push with your leg. I have seen these before on some sites. Let me see if I can find one.

Thanks michael. I've also seen plans for "knee-bump" shutoff's. I may end up going with the RIDGID 10" contractor's saw (on a stand, on mobile base). It is a dilemma: upgrading the saw, but not gettting a saw whose features I'll never utilize. I've at least managed to get the crowbar in my wallet! :rolf:

At least you realized before it is to late that it could be a problem. You have to wonder what machine designers are thinking sometimes.

My .02 cents worth on tablesaws is to get the best you can afford. You will use the tablesaw more then any other tool in the shop.

Thanks, Tom. One thing which may limit my options is I wanna see and lay hands on the saw before buying. Northerntool has some deals no Jet saws, which expired Sept 1. I have eyed a few Grizzly's, but have not seen them for sale used, locally.

Not to brag, but I got loot put aside for a saw. I just don't want too large a saw, I am working in a corner of my basement for now. I do not have a 220v circuit available, so 120v limits the HP I can get. It must have extension table and T-slot (my Craftsman has the U-slot).



On a side note: gov't research has shown that some of the most brilliant and/or handsome men in America are named Thomas (Tom, Tommy).

I'm with Tom (toolferone) on this one. The TS is very important.

Take your time and buy something you can keep and be happy with for a while.

Jeremy, that ReiTech switch is a good suggestion.

Pete, I was being lighthearted.;-) I would spring for a 220v circuit, for a $500 lightly-used Unisaw.

Update: the RIDGID now has cast iron extensions (earlier versions were aluminum) is a strong contender. But Woodcraft has a nice Jet saw for $400 (none at GBO store). The mobile base on the RIDGID may be the clincher. I gotta check out my mobile base options for the Jet.

Tom, the motor on the $400 Jet: is it tucked within the stand? or hanging out the back? Will the paint on the extensions come off on wood? I've read one owner's comments about that, but I am not sure how long he's had the saw. 27" x 44" table, correct? Is the 22" on each side of blade?

Well, I answered my own questions...by reading the Jet description at Woodcraft :BangHead:. Tom, Raleigh is a 2.5 hr drive for me, so I guess I will be calling on the store in Greensboro.

My last Q: with the saw fully assembpled, can I get it thru a 33" door opening? If the noise is too much for LOML, I will continue taking my power tools outside on the driveway.

Good news, I still have the crowbar in my wallet! 8-O

If that saw weighs anything like mine, I would say that moving the saw in and out the door would be inconvenient at best. It is a two person lift. If the table is the same size as my JWTS-10JF, I am not sure it will fit through a door

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, glad you found out. With the motor tucked inside it would fit through the door. I would have it on a mobile base with the wheel running side to side and roll it out sideways.

It is Fort Macon down at Atlantic Beach NC. That was a really fun day. She was just starting to understand about posing for the camera. She is my sweetie!!

I am glad you like the site. It is such a great way to share my hobbies and life with family and friends. There are many thing I would like to do different, but I would have to learn how first. (never enough time) I get a real big kick out of having my own web site. (says the closet geek in me)
