Does anyone have any idea why all the commercial pre-separator lids have 4" fittings, when so many dust collectors have 5" and 6" inlets.

The Delta 50-760 has a 5' inlet, and the cart has room for a trash can separator, as illustrated by this customer picture on Amazon.com

And here's another one: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/be/69/8726225b9da0b620c0473110.L.jpg

The above links were found in the Delta 50-760 page on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/cu...-9499482-5902264?ie=UTF8&s=hi&index=1#gallery

It would seem you would want 5" fittings on the pre-separator. Any comments or input will be appreciated.

i made my own and got fittings at woodcraft or klingspore. cant remember which. i have the smaller delta so 4" worked for me but instead of buying a 30 dollar lid i got a 20 dollar can with lid and spent a few bucks for fittings. didnt save much money but i think it works just as good and i have a bigger barrel so i dont have to empty it as often. my barrel is plastic and so is the lid so it seals well. got the brute can and so far it hasnt collapsed!:icon_thum 1 year i think so far. the fittings are angled slightly so i mounted them both on the lid pointing in the same direction so i get a bit of cyclone action too. YMMV.:-D

Don,

I thought it was a great question, but sadly I don't have an answer. I'm waiting to see if someone out there has any answer.

I am doing this from memory, but I think it has something to do with static pressure or losing CFM where the cyclone lids reduce the static pressure or CFM too much. I don't think they are capable of supporting anything larger than 4" pipe hence they are what they are. I wondered the same thing when I had my Jet 1200 and it had a 6" inlet.

I think you're on the right track here! There's a lot of information about this topic on the Internet, but I couldn't find much discussion about the inlet/outlet diameter. My research indicates the location of the outlet pipe should be in the center of the lid to take advantage of the cyclone action. However, this is not the case with several manufactured products. WoodCraft has a good article on a shop-made separator, however the product they sell does not follow this design concept.

WoodCraft Pre-Separator Article: (Outlet pipe in center of lid)

WoodCraft Plastic Separator: (Outlet pipe not in center of lid) http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=4310

Thanks to everyone for all the replies.

just wondered what did you do with this ?

Hi Jon,

See my post for the trashcan separator that I just completed: http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10866

From what my research indicates, this type of separator does not work as good, or not at all, if the pipe/hose is to large. My shop-made separator uses 4" PVC sewer pipe - both input and output.

I was not able to get the profile low enough to fit under the Delta 50-760 motor. I made a shop-made low profile 5" to 4" reducer to replace the Delta "Y" adapter, but it wasn't low enough. Actually, I did squeeze it in, but the 2" off-set between the two connections tended to kink the hose. I decided it wasn't worth anymore effort; so it just it sits on the floor next to the DC :-(.

FWIW, the pre-separator article on the Woodcraft web page plan uses 3" PVC.
