Need some help with Kreg Rocket pocket jig. I am going to make pockets for 2" faceframes with 3/4" materials. I understand the set-up for the depth collar setting. I don't understand positioning of the guide body onto the two pieces of wood. Is this a two step process or one. I have to think it is one and will I always be using all three pieces, guide body, riser block and base plate? What should be so simple just doesn't come across. Lorraine

If you are using it to attach your FF to your carcass, it is a two step process. Locate the jig on the carcass where you want the pocket, and drill pocket hole. Step two place FF in position and clamp in place, drive screw thru pocket in carcass into FF. Move to next pocket and repeat process. I am not sure of the particular set up of your kit, sounds like the K3 Master pack. but it should be pretty straight forward for standard 3/4" stock. .

My jig is a Rocket 2. Let me see if I understand. I position jig onto ff rail, does it matter how close or far away I make my holes? Those instructions were clear. Once I make the two cuts, my jig has two pockets, I would then put the stile in position for final drilling using the clamp provided and drill the two holes into the stile. I cut one sample this afternoon with two boards clamped together. The holes were fine but they didn't go into the second board but maybe 1/16th of an inch. It appears I wasn't in the proper position. How do I know the proper position? I set the bit for 3/4 stock but didn't see any information on how close to set the jig to the edge of the board. It seems that the more expensive Kreg jigs have measurement on the bottom of their jig.

Lorraine, you're doing everything just fine. The jig only drills the hole (pocket) in one piece. I don't even put the two pieces together to drill the pocket. The screws are self-drilling and should go in without any problems without a pilot hole. Mine has a stop lip that registers the jig off the end of the work piece and sets the pocket the correct distance away from the edge. Depending on your stock width you can use one or two or even more pockets.

Ok Dave, now it is coming together. Mine has the stop piece as well. It would hang off the end of my stock, correct? The extra piece I have that can go between the jig and the stop, what is it for?

Okay, on the R2 you will not use the middle piece on 3/4 material. the small end piece will bump up against your stock, then clamp the jig in place, drill the holes. You already know how to set the stop collar before you drill the holes. You will always only be drilling into the one piece, never in to it's mate. After drilling the holes and removing the jig you will use the clamp to hold the 2 pieces in alignment (the large flat of the clamp goes on the outside of the joint to keep them flat) Then drive the screws in and remove the clamp.

I hope this helps.

That extra piece that goes between the stop and the jig body is for adjusting the pocket location for different thickness of stock. You want the screw to come out around the center of the stock, so by moving the pocket farther or closer to the edge/end of the stock and using a different stop setting on the bit you can vary where screw comes out and use different thickness of stock.

Dave and Tom, thanks, now I understand. I said something simple sometimes you just can't see. My minds eye saw the two pieces being drilled at one time. Thanks so much for the help, once again you have come through for me. But what is that middle piece used for. Lorraine

I missed a couple of threads here. I understand the middle piece as well. This jig is going to be great. I see many possibilities. Thanks again for the help guys. I really couldn't have done it without the help. I am not stupid but those instructions just didn't come out clear for me. Lorraine

I have a setup jig for my DT jig. it is the first time I got all the settings right, I put it in first, so that I set my router to the right depth, and then rock on!

will be getting the K3 kit soon. Thanks for the tutorial, guys! (and thanks Lorraine, for asking the questions)
