plant stands

made a batch of plant stands with thru tenons and a half lap joint. first picture is a couple in white oak that i left unfinished for the front porch.

i really like the rounded off thru tenon. did that with some rasps and then sanded to 500. The last two are cherry and then one preshaping in pecan.

Pecan is terrible to work with. i planed 3 white oak, 1 red oak, and 1 cherry and my #4 1/2 stayed sharp the entire time. its really nice to have a narrow project so you can zip thru surface prep. but the pecan was very hard on the plane blades. i sharpened up the #4 and a low angle jack with a 55 degree blade recently. the 4 1/2 immediately started leaving lines where my edge was compromised. then the #4 had the same thing and finally got thru it all with the low angle jack. but all are now beaten up and need another sharpening.

i was using a mortising jig made of 3/4 ply so i lost 3/4 inch of depth with my router bit. the stock for all of these was a fat 4/4. so i had to mortise in from both sides. had much better luck coming in from both sides that with projects i've done in the past.
