It was in some Christams decorations we had quit using. I found it many years ago a few miles from where I now live while I was deer hunting. I think it was from a long leaf pine. It was about 5-6" at the biggest point.
I cut the excess off at the bandsaw until I got the center area about 3/4" square. Then I put lots of thin CA glue on it and let it dry. The CA made it about as hard as wood. Later I drilled it very carefully for the pen tube. Turned it very carefully using more thin CA when it was about 2/3 turned. Sanded it carefully and finished it with medium CA and BLO. Did you notice I did everything very carefully. :rotflm: I was not confident I would get a pen out of it...but I did and I kind of like it.
Oh, and I took the photo using my homemade photo light box. A pasteboard box with part of the sides cut out and wrapped with white muslin cloth. Using mechanic clip lights and CFL bulbs.
Your carefulness paid off nicely! I really like seeing someone trying something different. It seems that you usually get questions like "I've got such and such wood, will it work for whatever?" I usually respond by saying TRY IT! So good you for trying it!:icon_thum
WOW. 8-O I would've never thought of that in a million years. Pine cones, up to this point, have only been a nuisance to clean up or something I hit with the 9 iron after a few beers. ccasion1 :icon_thum Very beautiful and creative! :eusa_clap
Beautiful. Would never have thought it possible, going to have to try that and get some revenge at those White Pine cones that keep bonking me in the head when it's windy.
I once made bookends out of Long Leaf Pine Cones. To mount them I just drilled a 3/16th inch hole up the center and slipped it on a 16 penny. I was surprised that enough wood was in the center of the pine cone to hold. I never thought that enough wood was there to do anything else with or that such an unusual wood design was present. You have inspired me to try other things with pine cones. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Dolan, you're the man. I've never even heard of a pine cone pen. Really nice job. Oh yea, and a really good imagination!! Just one question, what's next???
Nice job. I always enjoy seeing people thinking outside the box.
Though I have yet to make one they remind me of the corn cob pens that were also popular.
They were quite a fad on the IAP about a year and a half ago.
It took a long time to get the archived threads to come up. http://www.penturners.org/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=23560&SearchTerms=Pine,cone
