Just joined the group last week and thought I would post some pictures of the last major project I built. We have a small bedroom (10' x12') that is mainly used for storage but needed a bed fort he grandkids.

The solution was a Murphy Bed. I got the plans and hardware from Rockler and modified it so it can broken down into sections to be moved.

Awesome! We don't have a guest room in our house, so we could use a bed like this. One question -- what is the purpose of this?

Is that to be used as a desk? Again, great job!

Rick, that is really a great looking bed.:icon_thum I have look at those before and have always wondered how difficult they were to make. Yours turned out fantastic. I really like the way you have the desk top that can swing up when the bed is being stored. You most safe a ton of room with that design. Thanks for sharing your photos.

You got it, it's a desktop. I don't know how much use it will get but it was in the plans so I built it.

What are the insets? For decoration or screw / bolt covers / just decorative effects? BTW, great job.

The plans called for pyramind shaped blocks to be attched there. My wife plans to decorate the room with a moose and bears. I etched copper disks with the images of moose and bears, drilled a shallow hole with a forstner bit and glued in the disks instead of the pyramid shaped blocks. Here's a picture of them.

The copper inset medallions are really classy -- I looked back at your short bio and now know that you do this type of engraving for a living. I'd be interested in embedding a medallion in my own work, especially work that I do on commission with credits information. Any chance you could produce special order items like that? Are other materials available? I'm sure others would be interested as well.

I'm an engraver by trade, making plate for the engaved stationery trade. Create a black and white artwork, shoot a negative, burn the image on a piece of photosensitive copper or brass and etch it with ferric chloride. Spray paint the whole thing, let it dry and sand off the surface with 600 grit paper then seal with a clear lacquer. I usually plates like these to sign some of my projects instead of a branding iron.

Rick, that is awesome. A great way to utilize and save space. A beautiful piece of furniture and excellent craftsmanship. Does it just hold a mattress or a box spring too? Dave

There is only room for a mattress. It's held in place in the box by elastic straps on the corners.

Interesting, thanks for your response. That is a excellent idea to use for "signing" your work and I bet others here, like Rob above, would be interested in getting you to make some. I will have to toy with a design to see if I can come up with a decent design for myself.

Rick, that is beautiful, functional, and absolutely one-of-a-kind. The custom etchings really set the piece off as unique and add both sentimental and craftsmanship value to the piece.
