Photos #6 type 4, pre-lateral Stanley

I found this plane at an antique mall, was almost afraid to buy it because I haven’t seen one like it before. But I could tell it is old and in fairly good shape. Photos later. Before I start to clean it and use it I decided to do a little reading. So, I found that this is a Stanley, I knew it was a 6 size, read that it is a type 4 made between 1874 and 1888. Definitely the oldest plane I ever bought. I need to clean with a nylon brush and some mineral spirits but it looks like the black is still there in all the right places, there is no pitted rust, only a deep patina. Really it looks like one of my daily users except for the obvious type differences.

more later, I have to get ready for work.

Interesting. I picked up a pre-lateral type 4 Stanley about two weeks ago... mine is a #4. It's the second one I've bought recently. You don't see them very often.

It seems like I'm seeing more tools around than normal.

Can't wait to see the pics.

Very nice. The beaded knob looks like it's in excellent shape.

Does it have the patent info in the wheel?
