This is the first finished project of the year (actuslly started before Christmas). Its mahogony with ebony and sycamore banding and stringing. The finish sequence is a coat of Minwax red mahogony oil stain followed by a coat of thinned amber shelac then a coat of Olympia mahogony gel stain followed by several more coats of thinned shelac. I think the shelac gives the white sycamore an aged look almost like ivory.

Larry,

I love the inlays, table is beautiful. I have one question though, when you put the gel coat on, how did you keep it from staining the inlay ?

Thank you,
Jimmy:)

Another impressive project! How about some details of the inlay? How did you make the grooves/slots and did you make the inlays yourself?

That's a great table. The inlay gives it a light touch. Really nice. I, too, would like to hear about your inlay technique.

To answer the question about stain getting on the inlay, I did the inlay after the last stain coat. It was the only way I could see how to keep it from staining. Has anyone else done it that way? I did all the grooves with a router and a 1/8" straight bit. I made the ebony and sycamore banding and stringing. Someone asked about painting the bottom of the legs. Its not paint its ebony.

Larry,
Great looking table. FWIW, I have have used blond shellac on the inlay prior to staining, that way it keeps the stain from darkening the inaly. Just use a small brush and give it a coat. Usually one coat is sufficient. You might want to give it a try on a sample until you are comfortable with it. BTW, how did you attach the ebony, dowel it? I saw DM do one like that and he just drilled a hole off center so that when he tapered the legs he didn't cut into the dowel. I have got to build another auction table soon and haven't decided on the style I am going to build. Last year was a demilume and this year........?????

Ditto what Larry said.

When I did the inlay in this crib, I used a couple coats of Zinsser SealCoat (aka blonde dewaxed shellac) to protect the inlay from the tung oil color coat I later applied to the cherry.

Applied only to the inlays with an artist's paintbrush and a steady hand..err..mostly steady hand.
