(Over)turning a hole plug

This is a hole plug being turned for the BB loading hole in a whacker. It needs to fit the hole nicely for gluing. I have “overturned” more than one of these until I got a remarkable grasp of the obvious.

After mounting the plug blank on the glue block, simply chuck up the correct Forstner bit and just kiss the face of the blank. Now you have an accurate guide to turn to.

Leaving the waste attached gives a stop to keep the plug out of the hole and also a handle for aligning the grain.

The waste gets removed when the peen gets tapered leaving a flush plug.

Made a demo and with the lathe spinning, this is the view as you are nearing final diameter using this technique of kissing the face with a Forstner bit.

When that little rim is just gone, you are at your target diameter. Easy to sneak up to with a spindle gouge.

Look Ma, no calipers!

I thought you had an inverse "LeftyTom moment": drilled and drilled, but the hole was still too big. Sort of "a goof too far".
