I wanted to see if I could turn a bowl with 32 open segments per ring, if I could then that would allow many more possibilities for patterns, the problem is each open segment is only 1/2 " wide < 1/4 " thick and only glued in the corners
I give it a go to see how far I could get before it explodes :rotflm:

Not great but not too bad

You've got to be kidding! I think it's beautiful. You should do a How-To series - not that it would do me any good. I think I could handle the 32 air spaces if all those little wood pieces weren't in the way.:rotflm::rotflm:
Great job

Earl, I think you've discovered the Moore's Law of Woodworking. You double the number of segments every 3 months, but because the scale is shrinking it's getting harder and harder to keep it all together.

Great looking bowl! Love that wood combination. But I guess 64 [STRIKE]bits[/STRIKE] segments isn't going to happen? :)

Wonderful job again there, Earl!!!:notworthy:

I must ask! What kind of glue do you use to glue up the segmented parts? You must have a lot of faith in whatever brand!!:icon_scra:icon_scra

I use TB II its strong enough the open segments have long grain glue joints even if there tiny :icon_thum

:icon_thum:icon_thum:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:icon_thum:icon_thum Very nice! When I first tried turning (years ago), I got a book on that and tried to do it. The "flat" part is way harder than the turning, IMO. My blank came apart before I even got near it with a gouge. It wasn't as scary as it sounds; the upper half separated and then broke on the bed before it really got up to speed. I didn't have the surfaces mated well enough.

I am doing a how to right now on the next one, it will be awhile before I get it finished, but it will show how to get perfect mating on them
