I'm a novice woodworker at best. I just started about a year ago when I realized that my job didn't give me a satisfaction of providing a finished product to look at. When that happens, it can get quite unfulfilling. So, one day I built my mom a curio cabinet and have been addicted ever since to woodworking.

I haven't adopted a style yet in woodworking and was very interested in learning new techniques. So, I'm looking forward to taking advantage of the shared knowledge. Stay patient with me. :BangHead:

I don't live in the NC area and my friend, Chris, told me about this website. I wish there was something like this by me but I guess this is why they call it the World Wide Web.

I'm looking forward to talking with everybody. Thanks for having me.

Best Regards,
Al

Welcome Al, Chris has already warned us about you :lol::lol:
We would love to see some pictures of work to decide for ourselves how much of a novice you are.

Here at work, I only have a picture of my latest project which I built for a couple that got married in September. She wanted something to display wine glasses and so I built it being fully able to hold huge 1' goblets. Little did I know, she decides... "I'm going to put liquor in there instead". :crybaby2: . The drawer in the center is designed to hold three bottles of wine. There's no bottom to it. You can see the ground. It's just two boards, one is cut to hold the base of the bottles and the other is to hold the neck. The cabinet was not stained but it was polyurethaned. It's made of Santos Mahogany. I did the research, Santos Mahogany is just called that but it's not real Mahogany. It costs $4.75 bf at the place I found it at. I liked working with it. It's hard like oak, smells like cedar and cinnamon. There were so many color variations. Depending on which board you picked up, it could be red, white or chestnut colored. It was fun to work with but I would never use that as my core choice of wood.

Anyway, you can probably figure out what I mean when I say, "I haven't adopted a style yet...". It was my first project where I had to develop moving parts. I used roller bearing slides for the drawer that I picked up at Home Depot and the hinges I picked up at Woodcraft on sale. Kinda expensive for a wedding present but I had so much fun building it. I kind of miss it.

You say you are not in NC, but your address is Westfield. I am in Surry Co. in Mt. Airy, and Mike Davis is in Stokes Co. just our of Westfield (with a Westfield address). Exactly where are you and let's try to get together sometime. I am retired, so just about anytime is good for me. Mike works in Greensboro so is more limited as to when to get together. Let us know.

BTW - welcome to the group (family).

Hi Al,

Welcome to the NCWW sawdust pile. It's always good to have another woodworker here. Be sure to start a photo album so you can show off more of your work.

Westfield? Anywhere near Loomis Ridge Rd? A life-long friend (more like a brother) lives there... about the nicest guy you could hope to meet.

Look forward to hearing more about your projects.

Ray
