Hopefully not taking anything away from Steve's post, I'll add that adding a VFD improves almost any 'old schoo'l lathe. Can't beat the slow-start, reversing, easy RPM control and remote control. Great advice to make sure the VFD installation is compatible with the lathe's existing speed control, to keep the low-end torque.

I converted my Delta Heavy Duty lathe to a VFD 6+ years ago and was lucky that the machine came with a 3ph motor and a Reeves drive, so the addition of the VFD was cheap and almost trivial.
