Or chisel mallet. I got inspired by one of the random pictures of Monty's turned mallet, and decided I could use one of those. It sure beats (haha) doing chisel work with a claw hammer It's Purpleheart and Maple. The Maple is mineral stained and has a greyish cast to it (some scrap wood) and the Purpleheart hasn't returned to it customary purple color yet, as it was turned lest than an hour ago. I slapped some Danish oil on it, for the pictures. It's a tool so I really don't care what it's finish looks like:lol:

If that's what the finish looks like when you don't care... I've gotta see what something you do care about looks like. The mallet came out really nice. I've never worked with purpleheart... how hard is it to work? It is beautiful wood.

Thanks y'all, it was a fairly easy project. The hardest part was getting everything jointed square and tight fitting. Because the Purpleheart wraps around the Maple and is butt jointed at the corners the Maple center has to be perfectly square. I used TBII for the glue up, because that is what I had on hand. I let the glue set overnight (about 18 hrs.) because I went to the zoo with my daughter today. Otherwise I would have turned it first thing in the morning. I found the Purpleheart to turn well, but it dulled tools quickly. The intersection of the PH and Maple made for some interesting turning. One softer and the other quite hard :eusa_doh:

I've made three of these mallets and will probably make a couple more. The next ones will have slightly concave tops so they can sit upside down on the bench without rolling around.

Outstanding Dave! Useful and beautiful. I was reading a description of purpleheart last nite that stated: "used for pool cues" and "gum deposits in wood make it difficult to machine; cutting edges dull quickly" So I can see how turning purpleheart and maple at the same time would be tricky!

The Maple handle started out as 2 3/8" square, and the Purpleheart was 7/8" thick laminated around the square of Maple. So I think the answer to your question is "yes".
