Came across this video for a good simple vise for an English style workbench, i.e. one with a thick front apron.
In summary, racking is opposed by a stout square arm mortised perpendicular to the chop. That arm bears against a strip screwed to the bottom of the benchtop and thus prevents racking. IMO, simple and quite effective vise for a bench with an apron.
