I have been asked more than any other question about my bowls, how do I cut the log up to get my bowl blanks.

For the benefit of anyone mildly interested or who genuinely want to start gathering their own turning material, I deposited a new visual tutorial on each step to get the most out of the log.

Also how to prepare the blanks to minimize losses from cracking and splitting.

Guys I'm happy I have a place where I can share it with people that want it.

Where I live, I am a bit of an oddball. Not many woodworkers and definetly no turners.

When I say I am going out and do some bowlin, they scratch their heads tryin to remember if a bowling ally has opened up in Clinton.

It gets em every time.

Next tutorial... a heavy, heavy boring tool I made to hog out vessels without chattering. I pull curls .125" thick with one pass using this rig. Be warned though, it aint for people with arthritis.

Once again - an outstanding tutorial! I have never seen this process more clearly illustrated. Thanks for posting it!

Only thing I would add is for natural edge bowls, if that's your thing - obviously you would have to leave the sapwood & bark on your blank. In that instance I would stop after cuts 1 & 2, and let that be the blank... is that what you would do? I usually chop off the corners with the chainsaw (if I can do it safely) or on the bandsaw, to get the blank in more of a rounded shape (actually octagonal) before going to the lathe.

CRAP! Youre right, I forgot to insert the mention of stopping at that point for a natural edge bowl.

I will amend that sometime tomorrow, and upload over the one on the server now. Thanks for letting me know. I meant to have that in there when I was building it.

Guys, I edited this tutorial only slightly, and uploaded Revision 2 this morning.

The only change is the point at which you stop cutting if you want to make natural edged bowls. I guess because I dont like natural edged bowls, I forgot to add that in there. But there are plenty of people who do like them, so I should have had this in the tutorial.

The point at which you stop the cutting steps is when you have two stump halves, and the pith is detatched.
