Here is my latest acquisition, nothing fancy, but they are supposed to be pretty good. I have one person to blame for my going ahead and ordering these this time and his name is not SteveD.

Needless to say, I have the disease bad....

Nice, I have a small machinist square and it is one of the most used tools in my shop. I can't imagine having one as big as yours:lol:

9" and 3" from McMaster Carr. Including shipping about $45 for both. Accurate I believe to .006 based on WoodGuy's recommendations.

I had intended to get a couple for awhile and the price seemed to be good. So far so good.

Travis, I saw you on Wednesday and you said you were done spending money....was that before or after you ordered these?!?!?

For any of you guys who have never been there, Travis' shop is beautiful. I had the pleasure to check it out and buy a biscuit joiner from him, and of course talk a little shop. Also, that toy chest he's been working on is coming along great, imho.

Nice score anyhow...I need to invest in something like this to get my corner to corner measurements to come out even!

Hey there....pretty neat..You do know that you are not helping us "to beat" the disease don't you....Squares! Could anyone ever imagine that Duke & Irene would ever lust for a square with the accuracy to .006? We have been working on measuring and drawing up our phone booth shop and obviously who ever built it needed one....There ain't one corner that is square...not one of the 8 corners!

Great score Travis!

I have a small Groz machinist square and it's truly indispensable. I also have rulers, but they never seem to work for me :eusa_thin

Unfortunately, it was after the fact. I got into trouble going into a chat room with WoodGuy and Insomniac and this is what happens.

The two of them are a bad influence.

note to self....avoid all contact with woodguy and insomniac....:eusa_whis

Ok, got it. I think the general remedy for WGD is to spend more time in my shop. If I don't talk to any of you bad influences, I won't know what I'm missing, right??? :icon_thum

 I'm sorry, I was not aware that you thought we were supposed to be trying to help you beat the WG disease. We just try to live vicariously through other's symptoms in an attempt to decrease our own!!!

Try changing the thread mode to hybrid. Otherwise, :-?

Actually, today, I can see it in "Linear Mode" only. None of the other modes show the picture.
Anyway, nice score on the squares! I'm suffering from severe tool envy lately:eusa_doh:
Concerning accuracy, what method should be used to determine how accurate a square is? :eusa_thin
Thanks

Most manufacturer's publish the accuracy. The simplest way that I know of to check a square is to get a board with a good straight edge, mark a line with the square, flip it over and mark another. If the lines are parallel the square is square. If it is not the angle is twice the amount the square is out.

How the get checked or verified in a factory or machine shop, I do not know, but I believe Woodguy or one of the other members that are mechanical or structural engineers would.

For framing type squares that are off you can ping them with a metal punch either in the inside or outside corner depending on which way they need to be adjusted.

Yes, nice score on the machinist squares, you'll enjoy those. I got a set several years ago and that was a landmark in the improvement in the accuracy and quality of my work. I checked all of the squares here with the machinist squares and was shocked to find out that 9 out of 10 were not square, all of them good quality USA or English squares. That accounted for a lot of poor joints, etc. that turned out "less than good" for unknown reasons. Related tidbit- I just went on a mission to purchase a perfectly sqaure new Starrett framing square. At one of the major WW stores, I had to sift through every one in their warehouse to find one that was accurate.
