New Shop

My wife and I are moving to Southern Pines, which I have mentioned on the board in other posts. I thought I would post some pictures. Even though its small I still felt like gloating. Thanks for tolerating me!

That shop space is coming along quite nicely. Looks like it is sitting on an excellent foundation!:eusa_danc What are the dimensions? Lot's of storage up there in the rafters too.

You'll have to keep us all posted on the progress, especially when you start filling it up with cabinets, benches and tools!

You are very fortunate to build it to your own specs!

Looking good. I envy anyone who has built their shop, the way they want it. I bought my shop, and a house came with it also. There so many things that I wish were different in it, but I can't change. I would love to build a shop knowing what I do now, it would be just the way I want it.

Oh man...........YOU SUCK! That is a great looking shop 4Yanks.:icon_thum I really like the wooden floor you elected to go with. Your knees, back and sharp hand tools will love you for it. Do you have access to the crawlspace beneath the floor? Looks like a good space to run duct work for a DC. Looks like plenty of storage overhead also. How do you gain access to the attic?

Where in Southern Pines are you building it? I lived in Southern pines for quite a while, right on East Connecticut Ave and my folks still live there so I go down there quitea bit. If you need any help finishing it off, just let me know, as it will give me a good excuse to go see them!

Thanks for all the positive comments. I'll try to answer your questions. First off, the building is 20'x16' with 9' ceilings. I had originally wanted it to be 20'x20'. But, the lot size dictated the smaller footprint in order to fit within the mandatory stepbacks (legal stuff???). The other building in the photo is the house we are having built so that we can live near the shop.

It is located near the intersection of Youngs Rd and Ohio streets in Southern Pines. I think the builder is as excited as I am about the shop. He quoted me a straight square footage price for the structure when we first discussed it. Since then he has approached me a couple of times with ideas for it that he has included at no cost. These include matching the exterior roofline, siding, windows and doors with those of the house. These features were initially supposed to be much more utilitarian. He gave me carte blanche to work with the electrician on wiring and lighting. The structure sits on a slab. I asked him if I could get in there prior to closing to install an insulated wood floor. He said, "sure." Then when I went out there yesterday he had already installed it to the description I had given him for my project (2x4 sleepers, foam insulation board, vapor barrier, flooring). FREE!!!! That saved me about $700.00. The attic will have pull-down access (~8' tall at the centerline). The shop will be insulated, heated and cooled. So my attic storage will have to share space with the HVAC coil and ductwork, but still agood amount of room. I am going crazy right now because my old shop is mostly dismantled and I won't move into the new one for another month. Then I'll only have a little while until its back to the sandbox for me!

I enjoyed meeting you and the short chat we had----when things settle down for you we must get together and talk woodworking, especially windsor chairs.

In the last week the roof was completed, electrical service was run to the building, electrical rough-in completed and insulation installed.

Great work 4Yanks! I have to admit that I am green with envy!:mrgreen: You are in fact very fortunate to have your own "little place out back". (With my four daughters and the LOML, the dog(male) and I head for the garage which sometimes ain't far enough away; or just a long walk!)

I am sure that you will have even more fun during tool setup!
