New shop, new hobby

Greetings to all. I am a new member in Greenville NC and trying to learn all that I can within the confines of still having to work M-F. I am in the process of building a new detached garage in which I will begin this hobby. Any help that I can get from members concerning machine arrangement, initial machine purchases and in particular fine dust collection would be much appreciated. Tom4748

Welcome to the group! We're glad you joined us. Do you know what type of woodworking you want to do - build furniture, turn pens/bowls, cut things with a scroll saw? You'll find a lot of good advice on this site, including suggestions on tool purchases, shop layout and lighting, etc. You'll find us to be a friendly group and we love pictures - and kind of live by the motto "no pictures, it didn't happen" :lol: . You can request a photo album and show us progress on your shop and things that you make. Feel free to jump in discussions and ask questions. Someone will be able to answer most questions or at least know where to direct you for the answer. Oh yeah, please add yourself to the member map (in the boxes on the left side of the screen).

welcome to the family! It's a dangerous crowd here, one guy in particular has this thing called 'woodguy disease' which causes you to lust after even more and more tools. Have fun with your new hobby!

Tom I think you will find everything that you will need here. Just feel free to ask about any tool and you will recieve plenty of answers. If budget is an issue you can make the Harbor Freight Dust Collector do ok for you. If you have a little more to spend it looks like a cylclone setup is most definitely the way to go.

There are a couple of very good free tools to help play around with layout. One is found on www.grizzly.com and the other at www.portercable.com . There have been several threads lately discussing dust collection - try here and here and here . I just went through a major upgrade to my DC with a lot of research so feel free to ask additional questions.

This is a great place to get good info. If you are looking for a good cyclone I'd suggest Oneida. You can build your own like SteveD or buy an import as well. I just prefered to buy a US made piece.

Sorry we are late in welcoming you. Irene and I are also new to woodworking. So far all we have done is spend money and try to fit 24'x24 shop into a 6'x14' shop! This group of merry men and merry ladies are wonderful and helpful....and they will "help you to spend your money."

Be careful. This hobby is habit forming! When I first started 15 years ago, I read every magazine and book I could get my hands on and picked projects I was sure I could do and had the tools for. As I gained knowledge and tools, I started picking more involved projects. I found the books and magazines to be very educational and learned alot about tools and how to use them. The magazines also include lots of tool reviews that are useful in deciding which tool to buy and sometimes they will have shop layouts for small shops, garages, basements, etc. They also have ads for free catalogs to order supplies, plans, etc. Good luck!
