Well boys and girls, it's my time to gloat a little. I just purchased a vintage Stanley No. 45 molding plane off E-Bay. It came in the original wooden box and has all the original blades in the original wooden storage box. It needs a little cleaning up, but other than that it is in excellent shape. Can't wait to get the blades sharpened and put it to use. Now on to my next quest - a Stanley No. 55!

I'm not very plane savvy myself but would love to see some pics. Sounds like you made a nice score!

I don't know much about them either but found this reference site:
Stanley Planes Model Reference

Yes this link tells you what the "#" means.
It's nice if it's complete (all cutters, the slitter,
etc.) You may find more info about Stanley
#45 at sites other than the B&G (the link
above), from which I was able to find my #45
was a type 7/8.

I've used the #45 to plane off part of the end
of a board, not that hard to set up, it cuts
fast (the previous owner must have done a
good job).

Ok fellas, as soon as my son gets back from vacation with my camera and I get the plane cleaned up I will post pics. Yes, all the parts are there plus 16 blades.

Good going Jim :icon_thum . 45's are really neat tools and I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. I'm glad you're going to use it because that will open up a whole new facet for your bag of tricks. They're not complicated to use as some people say, and actually very quick and easy to use. Once you get used to using it, it's a lot faster and simpler for a few cuts than setting up a machine. Plus there's operations you can do quickly and easily with the 45 that is difficult or impossible to do with routers or shapers. It's also very useful for matching old moldings and trim.
