I have been a follower of the woodnet forums for some time now and just this week I found out about this site and just had to get in on all the fun in North Carolina.

My wife and two boys are transplants from Illinois and came to North Carolina back in 1991. We absolutely love it here and it would take dynamite to get us to leave.

I have already done quite a bit of project work that can be seen in my gallery but I hope to learn a lot more and from my few days of lurking in the shadows, I can see a lot of good knowledge and talent.

I hope to meet several of you over the next few years. I love to ride my motorcycle all over North Carolina and a fellow woodworker makes a great ride and meet day. I am always ready to swap war stories and sawdust exploits in person.

My latest project was my wife's new jewelry cabinet that I was able to complete literely hours before her birthday. My next project will be to bulild Norm" router table and mount my new Frued 3.5 router in it. I can hardly wait.

Bear with my as I try to understand this new site and all the neat new features.:drunken_s

One more welcome. And, If you find a nice spring day worth riding 4 hours each way, feel free to give a shout and stop by Oxford.

Mike beat me to it. Come on over to Kyle's Sunday. I think we have about 20 people getting together to learn about milling lumber. Great place to pick up a few boards too!

What part of Illinois did you come from? I grew up in the western subs. of Chicago many years ago.
I look forward to your input in the forums and seeing more of your fine woodworking.

Welcome Gordon!
Glad you found us. I don't think you'll have to motor far from home to run into another NCWWer. And you're likely to find someone in every nook and cranny in the state :icon_thum

Enjoy,
Roger

Welcome Mark. I think you'll find this forum a little kinder and gentler than woodnet. Lots of good neighborly folks here.

Wow, what a wonderful welcome you all have presented. I feel like I just came home from a long weary journey. It’s so nice to have such a great group right in my own back yard. Let me try to answer a few questions that came up from my first post.

Gator,
Oxford will be on my driving list very soon. A four hour ride each way sounds just right. Just have a glass of cold water ready when I get there. I really don’t need great spring weather, just moderately decent spring weather. I will save your response and put you on my to do list. Thanks

DaveO,
Thanks for your kind comments. The picture is better than the real thing. I was still struggling with my finishing technique at the time but the piece still stands proud in my living room. The clock works were purchased from Germany by my father who decided one day to try woodworking. He built a practice piece out of plywood and pine and when he finished, he found that the “blood fever” to be a woodworker had passed and he did not want to make another one. He eventually gave me the works and I built the clock you see as my first project in North Carolina.

I grew up in farm country in downstate Illinois near Quincy Ill, but I spent 15 years living in Hanover Park in the western burbs of Chicago which must be pretty close to your old stomping grounds.

Lefty Tom,
I will definitely try to stop by and see the woodworking and the bike. There are so few of us with both passions and we must support each other.

Kyle’s shinding on Sunday sounds like a perfect place to start out with you folks. I have already got the mapquest directions and will make every effort to stop by and meet some of my new neighbors. I can hardly wait.

Again, thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome.
